In 2011, Ghana faced severe flooding twice, in both July and October. The eastern region was hit from July 21-25, resulting in five deaths and displacing over 10,000 individuals. Heavy rains returned at the end of October, causing further floods across various regions of the country. These later floods claimed over 70 lives and displaced an additional 280,000 people.
