On 10 September 2022, the Syrian Ministry of Health declared an outbreak of cholera in the Aleppo Governorate. This was prompted by the confirmation of 15 laboratory cases, including one death. Between 25 August and 10 September, surveillance data revealed 936 severe acute watery diarrhoea cases across Syria, resulting in at least eight deaths. The infection has primarily been linked to consumption of unsafe water from the Euphrates River and the use of contaminated water for agriculture, leading to food contamination.
